A Life Transformed

Mike grew up in San Diego during the turbulent hippie era of the 1960's. The Viet Nam war was in full swing and life for Mike, like most kids of that generation, was about attending psychedelic parties and exploring with drugs and alcohol. It was during the late-60's that Mike heard the gospel for the first time while attending a surf camp in Mexico. He gave his life to Christ and began a life of radical transformation.

While preparing for a career as a Veterinarian, Mike was torn between studying in the library and surfing at the beach. Unfortunately for his grades, the beach won out and it was time to consider a course correction. During a two-year exile period at a Bible college in Saskatchewan, Canada, Mike felt the call of God on his life to enter ministry. After the death of his father in 1974, he transferred closer to home and finished his college degree in Christian Education at BIOLA. It was at that time he also worked for Youth For Christ as a Campus Life Director and directed a rock climbing/backpacking ministry called Wilderness Treks.

His days in graduate school took him to Talbot School of Theology (M.A.), Golden Gate Seminary (M.R.E.), and also Southwestern Seminary where he earned a Ph.D. in Educational Administration. While teaching at BIOLA he went on to earn a second PhD. in Developmental Psychology at The Claremont Graduate School. He taught at BIOLA for 27 years in the Christian Education department specializing in coursework related to Non-profit Management. He also served as the Vice Provost for Academic Development and Effectiveness for a number of years before hearing God's call to come to Hume.

Mike has a passion for broken people having served as Senior Chaplain for the Irvine Police Department (11 years) and also a Reserve Deputy with the Orange County Sheriff Department where he was a member of their Search & Rescue unit (6 years). Today, you can find Mike scuba diving, rock climbing, golfing, and fishing. Mike has authored/edited 14 books and enjoys speaking at churches, camps, and leading short-term missions trips all over the world.

He has been married to Michelle for nearly 25 years. She also has an earned doctorate, writes books, and travels across North America as a popular conference speaker. Their children include Chantel and Brendon, both currently students at BIOLA.

One day, while honeymooning at Hume Lake in 1988, Mike turned to Michelle and said, "I dream of becoming the Director of Hume Lake one day." Needless so say, Mike is living his dream and loving every moment of it!
