Hume Lake Christian Camps - Week In Review

Happy Wednesday!

Not all updates are good, and life is often more challenging than our Christmas letters would tell. We recently received a short, troubling email:

"I want you to know that Christianity nearly ruined my life. The work you do there is a blemish on the world."

Ouch!

Increasingly, much of the world would agree with her. I am not sure she has ever been to Hume, or how Christianity nearly ruined her life; but she clearly has a negative view of Christians, and those who introduce others to Christ. Christianity, the religion, has admittedly caused all types of problems throughout history, and sadly, "nearly ruined" this woman's life as well.

But there is a difference between a life ruined by Christians and a life ruined by Christ. For those who measure success by financial gain, or unrestrained hedonism, "dying to self" in obedience to Christ certainly feels like ruin. Is it possible to live an un-ruined life? A perfect life becomes a matter of perspective. Is it based on pleasure or pain? Right or wrong? Do we measure it by an American lifestyle, or by a lifestyle of someone living in Somalia or Bangladesh? Is Christianity relevant? Is there a God, and does it even matter?

These are questions the world wrestles with every day. And every day we should be engaging with the world on these same questions. Hume Lake exists to impact culture one life at a time, transforming lives by introducing them to Jesus Christ. One way or another, lives are eventually going to be ruined; either through the cost of discipleship, or through the cost of rejecting Christ and the pain of sinful living.

If that means we are a blemish on the world, she is absolutely right.

Kept,
