Happy Monday!
Outdoor Education is in full swing! Thursday morning as I was heading to work I was greeted by the "Spud Boys." Across the street from my house are the "Spud Rocks," perfect for climbing, and they were being climbed! It was 7:00 am, and about 38 degrees outside; the "Spud Boys" were already at work, oblivious to the cold. Their moms would have worried. Mom, if you recognize your children, please know that shortly after we gave them a hot pancake breakfast, a warm bath, and a nice, terry-cloth robe to warm up in. (Well, one of those.)
It is called "Spud" rock because someone once carved the word "Spud" into the rock. I've always assumed it was someone who liked potatoes, but it could also have been someone named after a potato. Every morning this rock is, without fail, festooned with boys. During the day in classes they learn about creation, but early in the morning it's hands-on learning; cold hands-on learning.
Meanwhile, on the other side of camp, girls are doing similar things. They tend to dress up a bit more than the boys, but still seem oblivious to the cold. All this activity early on Thursday morning will be followed by morning devotions, classes in the woods, recreation times and, ultimately, by a decision time in the chapel at night. The odds are good that quite a few of these children will surrender at least part of their life to God.
Maybe even one of the "Spud Boys."
