Leading the Security Team
If you have been to Hume over the last 10 summers then you have probably met Charlie Strong. He leads our summer Security Team and is one of the friendly smiles that greet you when you check in at the Security Booth. Charlie had 30 years with the Los Angeles Police Department before retiring as a Sergeant. He got asked a lot, “What are you going to do when you retire?” One of those who asked with a purpose was Jim Huffman, who, as our Human Resources Manager, had Security as one of his responsibilities.
Charlie and his wife Janet knew Hume well. He had come as a college student, and all four of their children went through the different camps at Hume and each attended the Joshua Wilderness Institute as well.
Jim’s question interested Charlie, IF he had freedom to mentor the kids on summer staff and especially on his Security Team. Security handles all kinds of responsibilities from medical transports, crowd and traffic control, serving campers and vacationing guests, as well as taking care of dozens of requests from other Hume departments—but that is just the highly visible part. Every morning Security gathers to pray for all the guests on the property. They gather on Sundays to pray for each church that is bringing students to camp. Charlie is passionate about encouraging and praying with staff and guests, and challenges his young staff to do the same.
Charlie would tell you that Hume is an amazing place. We would tell you that it is because of amazing people like Charlie and Janet Strong.
