Outdoor Education 5th-8th Grades

Overview

The Hume Lake Outdoor Education program is a hands-on learning experience that will instill in students a passion for Christ, a respect for His creation and an understanding of the world around them.

Nestled deep in the Sequoia National Forest with multiple bodies of water and a variety of terrains, Hume Lake is the perfect classroom environment in which students will experience God's creation.

Each of our engaging classes is designed to exceed state science standards and reinforce our core values. Our energetic instructors make the learning process fun and memorable while continually pointing students back to the creator. Evening meetings feature speakers who know their bibles, live out what they teach, and know how to communicate with 5th through 8th graders.

Curriculum

By alternating our curriculum track each year we're able to fully invest in each class. This also ensures returning students don't repeat classes.

Track 1

Zoology 101
“The Wild and Furry”

From the mighty grizzly bear to the tiny shrew, mammals have unique characteristics in the environment. Students will be learning about various native Californian mammals, and what they eat, who eats them, where they live, and how God made them uniquely special.

Waterfront Ecology
“Fish, Water, and Reels”

Water. It is essential for daily life but some scaly creatures call it their home. In this ichthyology class, students will learn all about these slimy swimmers. They will even be able to test their luck and see if they can catch their own fishies for themselves.

Plant Life-Trees and Logging
“Trees and Lumberjacks”

Trees provide us with the oxygen that is crucial for our living. God created these living giants for an important reason. Students will learn about the history of logging here at good ole Hume Lake.

Earth Compounds and Elements
“The Building Blocks of Life”

What are materials that God used to create not only this world but the universe? Students in this class will learn about the tiny compounds called elements. Then taking a step back, they will also find out about what the earth is made of.

Creation
“Let there be a class on Creation!” And it was so.

Our God is a powerful God. He created everything in this universe. In this class, students will learn about the creation of the world, how humans messed up and why all of this is important today.

Flight
“Up, up and away”

Birds fly and eventually humans mastered the technique…with the help of machines, of course. In this class, students will learn the principles of flight and Bernoulli’s principle. They will put what they have learned into play when they build their own glider and see if they can beat the arch nemesis of flight: gravity.

Track 2

Wilderness Survival
This class allows the students the opportunity to see that God’s creation can be utilized to meet our basic survival needs. Students will be able to identify various resources, learn to collect food and water and learn the basics of orienteering.

Meteorology
Students will learn about basic meteorology, the water cycle, and air pressure. The class will also focus in on the Greenhouse effect and the impact on the environment.

Rappelling
Students will get the chance to learn rappelling basics and safety, and then get a chance to try it out on our rock wall!

Native American Life
Native American life takes a look at the lives of the Western Mono Indian tribe (also known as the Monachi) that lived in the area near Hume Lake. Students will learn the history and gain an understanding of what a typical day would look like in the life of a Monachi Indian.

Birds of Prey
The Birds of Prey class will allow students to learn about the various types of Raptors that live in and around Hume Lake. This class will cover anatomy and behavior of these birds of prey. Students will get a hands on experience as they dissect owl pellets to see what treasures they hold!

About Hume

People

Hume Lake exists to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Hume’s very mission statement expresses our desire that each person coming into contact with this ministry will learn of the love and power of a life lived in Christ. We believe that in this message lies the only hope for a world desperately searching for something more. The Ministry of Hume Lake Christian Camps is committed to reaching the lost for Jesus Christ.

Programs

As a Para-church organization, Hume seeks to serve the local church. Hume’s programs offer a Christian response to today’s culture through recreation, video, music, onstage speakers and presentations, which all work to introduce people to the Lord Jesus Christ in a way that is unexpectedly refreshing. The Hume environment is designed to minister to new believers while also encouraging those who are saved to pursue God in a new and deeper way.

Facilities

Nestled in the Sequoia National Forest, 365 acres of God’s creation provides the perfect backdrop for a life changing experience. While our facilities include multiple chapels, dining halls, pools, recreating lawns, ropes courses and deluxe accommodations; most important are the majestic setting and solitude where you can hear God speak to you. Hume’s facilities have been designed to provide everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable retreat experience.

Transformation

True life-transformation requires more than a fun mountaintop experience. Simply serving the local church by sharing the Gospel isn’t enough. We understand that true transformation is the work of the Holy Spirit. It’s our role to diligently and prayerfully prepare our staff, programs and facilities and then depend on God to work in the hearts of his people.
