Unite: Young Adults Retreat

Unite: Young Adults Retreat

Unite is for college age youth and young adults. We bring together like minded individuals and groups from all over the west coast (and beyond) for a long weekend of amazing activities, great speakers, fantastic music, and more coffee and food than you'll know what to do with. Join in the many activities of camp or if you'd rather simply hang out with friends and meet some new people we've got plenty of space in the Snack Shop and the Hume'n'Beans coffee shop.

So come reconnect with your friends and rekindle your relationship with God in a place free of distractions and surrounded by His creation.

Dates and Speakers

2012 Fall UNITESeptember 1-3, 2012
  • Speaker: Darin McWatters

Darin McWatters grew up in Phoenix, AZ where he learned to wear long pants in 120 degree weather, apply sunscreen without blotching, and avoid the dreaded venom of the Gila monster. For a couple of years he lived like a tamborineless gypsy, roaming incessantly back and forth across the highways and byways of America in the band, Everybodyduck. Then he did some missions work with mountain people in the Sierra Nevadas, as the Program Director of Hume Lake Christian Camps and founder of the Joshua Wilderness Institute. Now he lives in Long Beach where he still wears long pants and sunscreen but almost never thinks about Gila monsters. He is currently a teaching pastor and Pastor of Nextgen ministries at ROCKharbor Church in Costa Mesa, and weekly host of Frank the Podcast, a humorous and irreverent look at life informed by faith. He has been married to his wife Shannon for 15 years, and has four children Jack, Hank, Lily, and Will. Understandably, he is very tired most of the time.

Band

2012 Winter Camp Band: Reveal

Reveal, based out of Orange County, is a worship group that was founded out of Biola University. The band began by serving their immediate community at the University, but they quickly began leading at churches and conferences throughout Southern California. They have now been leading worship together for the past four years and recently finished serving at Hume Lake Christian Camps for the summer as the Meadow Ranch Band. Throughout their time together, Reveal has been able to shape their craft to deliver a powerful and engaging live worship service.

“During these past four years, I have seen what God can do through passionate worship and the impact it can have on an individual’s ongoing relationship with the Lord. Our desire is to lead people to Jesus through music and other spiritual disciplines, with the hope of producing life transformation.”                                                                                                                                                              – Leader, Emily Berger

Reveal wants those who worship with them to engage with God, as well as openly and honestly reveal their hearts, as He reveals His heart to them. Through dynamic arrangements paired with a powerful female lead, Reveal is determined to have worship be much more than an opening and closing to a service, but a time where the Spirit moves freely and lives are changed.

An Aweful Life
An Aweful Life examines what it looks like to live a awe inspired life of worship based on an understanding of God’s mercy through Jesus Christ.

We were created to worship God and be in awe of who He is. If we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that our lives are an act of worship, however, too often that worship goes to celebrities, leaders in the church or ourselves instead of to the One who is truly worthy. When we look at who God is and the gift of His son Jesus, we should fall to our knees and be in awe that God, in his great mercy, desires to be in a relationship with us. This should cause us to respond by offering all that we are back to him as a living sacrifice, a life that is set apart from the world and acceptable to God. A life lived in awe of who God is.

An Aweful Life takes a look at the lives of individuals who have learned to live each moment in awe of God’s mercy. We will learn what day to day worship is, and seek out practical ways we can offer our bodies to God as a living sacrifice.

Theme Verse:
Therefore, I urge you, brothers an sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
[Romans 12:1]

Activities

  • Innertube Run:Can you say rope tow?!?
    Photo of Innertube Run

With 5 snowblowers working overtime the tube run is always ready to rock, and with ample rope tows, you'll never have to hoof it up the hill again.
    Free!

  • Broom Hockey:Don't be a puck hog
    Photo of Broom Hockey

We provide the knee pads, helmets and brooms. You provide the sheer grit and determination it takes to go running across a frozen arena knowing full well that there's only three things that can stop you. The ice, the wall or another body.

I'm pretty sure that Billy Joel's hit 'Running on Ice' was inspired by Broom Hockey.

  • Boxsled Blitz:Cardboard, duct tape, snow... duh
    Photo of Boxsled Blitz

Bring plenty of duct tape and cardboard because you'll be building and racing your very own boxsled down the tube run.

Here's a hint: Waxed cardboard is the best. Don't worry, we supply the helmets.

  • Screamer:42' drop. Take the first step.
    Photo of Screamer

Whether you step off the edge on your own or you let the guide drop you off backwards this is a thrill you don't want to miss. On Belay!
    $3 per jump

  • Paintball - Winter:5 games, 2 fields, 25 per team
    Photo of Paintball - Winter

You know all those James Bond movies where they have epic gun fights in the snow? That's what this is like... only without the snowmobiles and explosions.
    $10 / $4 for extra rounds.

  • Snowboarding:Catch air a mile high
    Photo of Snowboarding

If you always wanted to learn how to snowboard but never got the chance this is perfect for you. Bring your own gear, or rent ours.
    FREE!

  • Ice Skating:Toe Pick!
    Photo of Ice Skating

You don't need to know what a triple lutz is in order to enjoy the sensation of gliding around the ice rink thumbing your nose at friction and gravity.
    FREE!

  • Firepits:Spin a yarn and toast a smore
    Photo of Firepits

If you've never had the privilege of sitting around a firepit up in the mountains where you're a mile closer to the stars, then you need to take the time to stop by one of the many firepits sprinkled all over camp.

Even better, grab a coffee and meet up with a friend at a firepit to get away from the crowd.

  • El Diablo Mechanical Bull
Photo of El Diablo - Fishermens
  • O.K. Chalet:Rustle up some fun!
Photo of O.K. Chalet - Youth

Part western tavern, part ski chalet — you can find all your favorite 'snack shop' fares, a wide range of board and card games, billiards, and our famous (FREE!) mechanical bull, 'El Diablo.'

Quite simply, it's the largest, warmest, most funnest hangout around.

  • Hume ‘N Beans:The best coffee shop for miles
    Photo of Hume ‘N Beans

Check out the art on the wall, catch up with an old friend or meet some new ones in our full service coffee shop.

A double shot mocha is the perfect way to warm up after a brisk walk!

  • Worship:Make a joyful noise
    Photo of Worship

While this may not be a 'traditional' activity, when you're in a throng praising the Creator with one voice it can be more of a thrill than stepping off the screamer, and it can be more of a wake up call than a paintball shot to the chest.

  • Food:3 squares a day, all you can eat
    Photo of Food

You'll be burning a lot of calories dodging snowballs, clinging to your innertube, doubling over with laughter, and hoofing it around camp. Our dedicated full time food service staff will be single mindedly preparing the best possible entrées to replenish your body while tantalizing your taste buds.

Oh yeah, it's all you can eat.
